Eyres Monsell Primary School, Leicester
10/01/2005

Eyres Monsell Primary has 350 pupils, who have a wonderful large playing field in front of the school building, which classrooms look on to. One of the main topics, which they identified that they would like to concentrate some efforts onto, was their energy management in school. They were very aware that as a building, there were numerous things which they could begin to do to use less energy, such as turning off lights, closing doors, putting computers onto standby. All of which have had campaigns running to achieve this across the board in school. Posters were made, assemblies delivered and general awareness has been dramatically increased. However the school was not content to leave it at that, they decided that they would look into the possibility of putting a wind turbine into their school grounds, not only to produce their own supply of renewable energy, but also to act as an excellent educational tool for generations of pupils to come.

They looked for extra sources of funding, applied for planning permission, took trips to see other wind turbines and importantly involved the local community on every level. This will be a fantastic tool for developing alternative methods of learning across many different curriculum topics and is hoped to provide a focal point for the community.
